Lets see what the diagnostics reveal, I suspect it will show bad sectors on the drive which may have trigered the SMART failure. I have seen examples where the SMART test has passed but the drive has failed. The failed SMART test should be taken seriously though so 'backup' everything you do not want to loose just in case. The SMART test is not all that reliable but the manufacturer's diagnostics can be trusted.

If you have a Toshiba/Fujitsu hard drive I would suggest the use of the diagnostics from the Seagate link as this will work on all makes of drive and on any OS. Insert the disk in the drive then reboot and the disc will load into dos. Then click on the two grey discs with the arrow in between (bottom left) and leave it to complete the operation.Д«oot the PC into the Bios setup and set the CD/DVD drive to 1st in the boot sequence.

Select the top left hand option to burn image file to disk and then on the next window click on the small yellow folder icon and browse to the file you have downloaded from the links below.

Install the program and start the application. For all other versions of windows (if you do not have an ISO burner) download this free software. In Windows 7 right click the extracted file, select Open With, then select Windows Disc Image Burning Tool then follow the prompts. When the download is complete right click the file and select Extract Here and burn the image to a CD. Identify the make of your hard drive and then use one of the links below to get the manufacturer's diagnostics for ISO (CD) not the one for Windows. It may have been jostled a bit being moved around which is the only thing I think could have caused the hard drive to become faulty. From a tiny bit of research it appears that these are serious issues with my hard drive! It surprised me because as I said, I haven't had any obvious issues going on. It failed the SMART Short Self Test and the Targeted Read Test. Last night, I decided to run the Dell PC Checkup, as I hadn't done one in a while. I don't keep a lot of pics or music on it and probably 90% of its use is strictly for web surfing.

I keep all the software up to date (as far as i know), do regular antivirus scans and disk cleanup, and do auto defrag once a week. I really haven't had any problems with it at all.
